Art Curriculum Overview

Discipline Based Art Education (D.B.A.E)
K-3 students at Center School in Willington have at least one art class per week. Kindergarten has Art class twice a week for 30 minutes each time.  First, second and third grade have Art class once a week for 50 minutes.  Our DBAE structured curriculum meets   the state and national art education standards. DBAE is based on the following:
Art Production
Art making encourages individual expression, creative problem solving, as well as an introduction to tools, techniques and materials that students may use throughout their lives.
Art History
Students can learn to identify cultural differences in art and in the styles, themes, media and names of artists.
Art Criticism/Analysis
Students learn to talk about their own work and the work of others.  They learn to contrast and compare, to recognize the elements and principles of design as used by artists.
Aesthetic Awareness
What is beautiful? Can the idea of beauty mean different things to different people? What do you like and why?  The study of art provides children with the visual and linguistic tools to articulate their feelings about what they observe.
